How to install an eSIM on iPhone

Step-by-step instructions to install your eSIM with a QR code or manual iOS setup.

Updated on May 13, 2026

Install it at home, on Wi-Fi. The QR code arrives by email and also lives in My eSIMs, in your account. Installing does not spend your plan: validity only starts when the eSIM first connects in a covered country.

Step by step

  1. 01

    Open Settings › Cellular

On some iPhones the menu is called Mobile Data. Tap Add eSIM.

  2. 02

    Choose Use QR Code

Point the camera at the code from the email. If the code is on the same screen, use Enter Details Manually and paste the data from your order.

  3. 03

    Name the line

Something like Wavee Travel. Without it, both lines look alike when you pick which one uses the internet.

  4. 04

At your destination, turn the line on

Settings › Cellular, select the Wavee line and switch on Turn On This Line. Then, under Cellular Data, pick the Wavee line.

Two mistakes that cost you

Turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching, under Settings › Cellular › Cellular Data. With it on, the iPhone falls back to your home SIM whenever the signal dips, and your home carrier bills you for international roaming.

Do not delete the eSIM after installing it. The profile is single use: once deleted it cannot be installed again on the same device, and a new one has to be issued.

Frequently asked questions

Can I install it before travelling?

Yes, and we recommend it. Installing needs internet, and a problem is far easier to solve at home than at the airport. Validity does not start at installation.

The QR code is refused. What now?

It is almost always one of three things: the device has no Wi-Fi, the eSIM was already installed once, or the model does not support eSIM. Check your device against the compatible list and, if it persists, write to us with a photo of the error screen.

Does my home SIM stop working?

No. The eSIM is a second line: your number stays active for calls and texts, and you choose which of the two uses the internet.
